The Surprising History of Sourdough
Did you know that for most of human history, all bread was sourdough?
Around 5,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians accidentally discovered that flour and water left to sit would naturally ferment and rise. For thousands of years, this was the only way bread was made.
It wasn’t until the 19th century that commercial yeast was introduced, making bread much faster to produce. Today, artisan bakers are returning to the original method—using only flour, water, salt, and time.
Every loaf of sourdough is a small piece of history, baked almost exactly as it was thousands of years ago.
